How to get your drone license

From zero to Remote Pilot in six steps.

The FAA calls it a Remote Pilot Certificate with a small UAS rating. Here is the whole path, and the course walks you through each step.

    Create an IACRA profile to get your FAA Tracking Number. You need it to book the test.

  2. Study for the test

  3. Book the knowledge test

  4. Pass the test

Common questions

Do I need a Part 107 certificate to fly my drone?

You need one for any flight that isn't purely recreational, including flights for a job, for your own business, or for pay. Hobby flights can instead follow the recreational rules and the free TRUST test.

How hard is the Part 107 test?

The test shows 65 multiple-choice questions: 60 are scored and 5 are unscored. You get two hours and need 70% (42 of the 60 scored questions) to pass. Most missed questions come from sectional charts, weather reports, and airspace.

How much does the Part 107 test cost?

About $175 per attempt, paid to the PSI testing center when you book. That fee is separate from the course.

Can I take the Part 107 test online?

No. The initial knowledge test is taken in person at an FAA-approved PSI testing center. Only the recurrent training you complete every 24 calendar months is online, and it's free.

What's on the Part 107 exam?

Regulations, airspace and operating requirements, weather, loading and performance, and operations, which include airport operations, radio communication, emergency procedures, and aeronautical decision-making.

How long does it take to study?

The course has a little over 6 hours of video. Most people add reading and practice tests over one to three weeks. Book the test once you're scoring well above 70% on full practice exams.

How do I get my certificate after I pass?

Apply in IACRA on FAA Form 8710-13 using the 17-digit exam ID from your test report. After the TSA security check you can print a temporary certificate and start flying under Part 107.

Does a Part 107 certificate expire?

No. To keep flying under it, you complete free online recurrent training every 24 calendar months.

How old do I have to be?

You can take the knowledge test at 14 and hold the certificate at 16.
